Ch 1. Requirements
Last Updated: 10/28/07Section 1.1 - Operating System Notes
Elite Bulletin Board has been test on Windows & Linux and has ran on both with no real issues.
but I should let the windows users know that apache was used on both trys, Using IIS shouldn't make any difference though.
If you have problems running this because of your operating system, please let me know.
Section 1.2 - PHP Version Notes
First off you should check with your host to see that you have both PHP & MySQL. If you do not have either one, you WILL NOT be able to use this program.
In order to use this bulletin Board program you should have version 4.3.10 at the very least. The newer the php version you have, the better off you'll be.
Elite Bulletin Board will work on php 5, if you use php 5, it's recommended you use 5.2 as some portions of Elite Bulletin Board are designed for php 5.2(those portions do work on php 4 as well however).
Section 1.3. MySQL Version Notes
Again as stated above, please make sure you have MySQL installed where you are hosted at.
It recommended that you have at least one of the 4.1 versions. The program has also been tested under version 5 of MySQL and has not encountered any issues.
Section 1.4. Other items to consider
In this program are features that require some extra items that some host doesn't provide, it doesn't mean you can't use this program, it just means that feature will not work for you and these features can be disabled for that reason.
Spell-Checker: In order to use the spell checker feature, you must have Pspell installed.
CAPTCHA: In order to use this feature your host will have to have GD Library v2 installed. In order to use the High-settings of the CAPTCHA, you will also need freetype enabled.
CAPTCHA Low settings uses the basic requirements for anti-spam protection. CAPTCHA High settings offers several key items that makes cracking the code harder for bots.
GZIP compression: This feature compresses the program to make it use less bandwidth, this is listed here as some hosts provide their own compression system and using this will conflict with the server's setup. Ask your host if they provide a compression setup before use the one from this program.
Secure Login: In order to select this as an option, you MUST have a valid SSL certificate issued by a certified vendor. Failing to have an SSL Certificate will cause errors if selected.
Mailing: mail() is a feature used on this script for notifing users about new post, and new PM's, it can also be used to email other users via the Admin CP, but many free hosts will disable this function due to spam-related issues. If you happen to be on one of these host, then you either have to use SMTP or you will not be able to use the notification portion of the progtram.
Mailing By SMTP: SMTP is another way of sending mail, it's also known as POP3. Some host require their users to use SMTP for sending and recieving mail. Make sure you get all the details when using SMTP, otherwise the emails will not send and you'll get errors.
Something I HIGHLY recommend you do before installing Elite Bulletin Board is to contact your host and make sure you meet the specs to use this script.
